The rooms at night

The hotel itself is a gem, featuring traditional architecture and lush gardens. Most rooms are typical American: spacious with two double beds and comfortable with some southwestern touches. Many rooms even feature a fireplace and private patios; nice for cozying up on chilly evenings. We stay at one of the entry level rooms which could use some updating. However, the rooms are clean and well-maintained, with comfortable beds and all the necessary amenities.

As we had a long drive on a particularly hot day, we treat ourselves on a refreshing dive in the on-site pool. Here we find comfortable lounge chairs and umbrellas for soaking up the sun. With kids in tow such a pool is always a tremendous bonus.

Another thing we really liked and highly recommend is the amazing breakfast. The restaurant area is a relaxing place to start your day. We love the warm and inviting atmosphere. The breakfast menu reflects the region's unique and vibrant cultural heritage. After breakfast we stroll into town. The Taos area has been inhabited by indigenous people for over a thousand years. In the 1500s, Spanish conquistadors arrived and established a mission in the Taos Pueblo. The Spanish influence can still be seen today in the town's architecture and cultural traditions. In 1821, Mexico declared its independence from Spain, and Taos became part of Mexico. During this time, the town became a center of trade and commerce, with merchants traveling from Santa Fe to Taos to trade goods. New Mexico became a U.S. territory as a result of the Mexican-American War in 1848, and achieved statehood in 1912. The state's diverse cultural heritage, including Spanish, Mexican, and Native American influences, has shaped its unique history and character.

Today, Taos is known for its vibrant arts community and cultural heritage, with many galleries, museums, and cultural events showcasing the best of Taos' rich artistic traditions. It is a center of the American Arts and Crafts Movement, attracting artists and writers from across the country. The Taos History Museum is a must-visit for anyone interested in learning about the town's past, while the Kit Carson Home and Museum is a great place to learn about the famous frontiersman who once lived in Taos.

Besides modern Taos, there's no shortage of activities to keep your family entertained. For example, we visit Taos Pueblo. The Taos Pueblo, located just outside of town, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in the United States and is a testament to the area's rich cultural heritage. An ancient Native American village that has been continuously inhabited for over 1,000 years. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a fascinating place to learn about the history and culture of the Taos tribe and the region. Visitors can take guided tours and observe the traditional adobe homes and kivas, or underground ceremonial rooms, that are still in use today. We explore the village on our own and find some amazing souvenirs to take home.

With the beautiful Sangre de Cristo Mountains as a backdrop, Taos is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you want to hike, bike, or just relax in nature, you'll find plenty of opportunities to do so. Some popular places to explore include the Taos Gorge Bridge, Rio Grande del Norte National Monument and the Rio Grande River. Having your own wheels will give you the advantage of taking one of the scenic drives which loupe the area. One of the most popular drives is the Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway, which takes you through the stunning Carson National Forest and by several picturesque mountain villages.

A 45-minute drive from Taos brings you to Diablo Canyon, a popular tourist destination due to its natural beauty and historical significance. The canyon is known for its scenic hiking trails, rock formations, and stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Additionally, Diablo Canyon has a rich cultural history, with evidence of indigenous peoples and early Spanish settlers having lived in the area. We highly recommend a visit.
