New York City is one of the most iconic cities in the world and is widely regarded as the cultural and financial capital of the United States. Located in the northeastern part of the country, New York is home to a diverse population of over 8 million people and attracts millions of visitors each year. It is a city that is steeped in history, culture, and innovation, and has played a pivotal role in shaping the modern world. The history of New York City dates to the early 17th century when it was founded by the Dutch as New Amsterdam. Dutch as we are, we always find that a nice detail. The city changed hands several times during the colonial period and became a major hub for trade and commerce. After the American Revolution, New York became the capital of the United States from 1785 to 1790 before moving to Washington D.C.

Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, New York City continued to grow and expand, becoming a center of manufacturing, finance, and culture. It was during this time that the city experienced a surge in immigration, with millions of people coming to New York from all over the world to pursue the American Dream. This influx of people and cultures helped to shape the city's unique character and gave birth to new forms of art, music, and literature. In the 20th century, New York City emerged as a global leader in finance, media, and technology. It became the center of the entertainment industry, with Broadway and Hollywood both based in the city. New York also played a pivotal role in the Civil Rights movement, with the Stonewall riots in 1969 marking a turning point in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights.

Today, New York City is a cultural melting pot that is renowned for its food, music, and nightlife. It has some of the best restaurants in the world, ranging from street food vendors to Michelin-starred establishments. The city's music scene is equally diverse, with everything from jazz and hip hop to rock and classical music. And for those looking for a night out, there are countless bars, nightclubs, and theaters to choose from. And now for a few days we call this melting pot our home-away-from-home.

There are plenty of family-friendly activities in New York City that are perfect for kids and teenagers. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of our favorite places to visit, with a vast collection of art and artifacts from around the globe. Your kids will love the Egyptian exhibit, which features mummies and other ancient artifacts. The High Line is another must-visit destination, with a beautiful and unique space that offers great views of the city. We also love spending time in Central Park, where you can rent a bike and ride around the park. Or enjoy a picnic lunch in one of the open fields. The Empire State Building was also a highlight of our trip, offering breathtaking views of the city from the top. And of course, no trip to New York City is complete without a visit to Times Square, which is the bustling heart of this grand metropole.

Besides these well-known sights we also recommend exploring Greenwich Village itself as it is one of the most vibrant and eclectic neighborhoods in New York City. It is located on the west side of Manhattan and is bounded by 14th Street to the north, Houston Street to the south, the Hudson River to the west, and Broadway to the east. Greenwich Village is known for its charming tree-lined streets, historic brownstones, and a bohemian vibe that has attracted artists, writers, and musicians for decades. The history of Greenwich Village dates back to the 19th century when it was primarily an industrial and working-class neighborhood. In the early 20th century, it became a hub for artists and intellectuals, with many famous writers and poets, such as Edgar Allan Poe and Walt Whitman making their homes there. The Village was also home to the Beat Generation in the 1950s, with writers like Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and William S. Burroughs gathering at coffee houses and bookshops in the area.

Today, Greenwich Village is a popular destination for locals and visitors alike, with a lively cultural scene, excellent restaurants, and unique shopping opportunities. The neighborhood is home to many historic landmarks, including the Washington Square Arch, which is located at the center of Washington Square Park. The arch was built in 1892 and was modeled after the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. Greenwich Village is also home to New York University, which has a sprawling campus that occupies a significant portion of the neighborhood. The university has played a significant role in the development of the Village, with many of its buildings and facilities located within the area. The Village is also known for its many theaters, with Off-Broadway and experimental productions often debuting in the neighborhood's small theaters.

We find that there is always something new to discover in New York City, making it a fantastic destination for families with teenagers. In summary, our stay at the Walker Hotel Greenwich Village is a fantastic experience, and we highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a stylish and comfortable home base in the heart of the city.
